Strategies for the 21st Century
Something in the world is changing — and each year the changes are quicker and causing more convergence
It doesn’t take more than a good look around you to see that many things we’ve taken for granted in the 20th Century are breaking down today. There even are some obvious signs that we’ve reached the end of the post-WWII capitalistic growth era.
THE PRODUCT/SERVICE LIFECYCLE
During that era, organizations basically developed their products/services on a twenty-year lifecycle. Ideas for new products/services were formalized, visualized, intellectually-protected, then prototyped in the first phase. Quick adapters would then take over, deciding how to build market strength and how to pilot its initial production, until it consistently met or exceeded model expectations, and could be turned over for full-production or grand openings to end the second phase. Full-production began the third phase. In this phase, optimal execution is key, as margins and profits are grown or maintained based on how productive, efficient, and agile the product or the service can be sustained based on stakeholder expectations. When this production-profit stage began to slow. The lifecycle would begin its last phase, the end of life or rework stage; and a newer product or service would be created to replace it.
But, things are changing …
By the 1960’s, with the advent of the Space Race, organizations found ways to “fasttrack” the Product/Service Lifecycle to shorten the cycle time to just 10 years. With the advent of the personal computer and the Internet in the 70’s and 80’s, the lifecycle was shortened again and again to just months. And, today, it has been shortened to just over seven weeks — from ideation though end of life! …and other things are changing too!
The Internet has successfully made every individual into a globalist. Capitalistic economics was always driven by creating scarcities and strategic advantages because of scarcities of resources. Today, though abundance in access to resources has thrown a curve-ball into the traditional strategic ways. Because of that, things are not only quickening, they are also converging! How can an individual, or an organization keep up with the torrid pace?
